IRP Manitoba

Are you planning to start a trucking company in Manitoba? If so, it’s likely that you understand the importance of obtaining licenses and permits. Besides getting the USDOT number and IFTA decals, you’ll need to acquire IRP licenses and cab cards for your fleet vehicles. These credentials are what allows you to operate across multiple states in the U.S. and several provinces in Canada.

What is IRP?

IRP stands for International Registration Plan. It is an agreement between multiple states in the U.S. and several Canadian provinces of which Manitoba is a member.

The sole intent of this program is to maximize the use of highways. As well as to promote a fair share of taxes among jurisdictions. It allows carriers the freedom of operations and movement, both inter- and intra-jurisdictionally, with only one license plate and cab card. This kind of convenience is what makes it so important for trucking entrepreneurs in Manitoba who have vehicles operating in the U.S. and Canada.

Registering Vehicles in Manitoba IRP

When applying for IRP registration, you must be eligible to use Manitoba as your base jurisdiction. In other words, you must show proof of residency or have an established business within the province. Your motor vehicle(s) must also be used or intended for operations in at least one more jurisdictions (besides Manitoba). As well as meet one of the following conditions:

  • Have two axles and a GVW in excess of 11,794 kilograms (26,000 pounds), or
  • Have a minimum of three axles, regardless of weight, or
  • Be used in combination, with the GVW exceeding 11,794 kilograms (26,000 pounds).

To complete the application, you must submit several other supporting documents. These include, among others:

  • bill of sale
  • lease agreement for leased vehicles
  • valid Certificate of Inspection
  • proof of insurance.

Manitoba IRP Renewal

They usually send out prorated vehicle renewal packages in Manitoba two months before expiration. You are required to complete and sign your original IRP Prorate Vehicle application and IRP Prorate Fleet application. The renewal applications must be submitted at least one month before the expiry date. Do you intend to make any amendments, additions or deletions? Be sure to include all the required supporting documentation. To ensure that your renewal credentials are processed on time, make an effort to file your applications as soon as possible.

Are Electronic IRP Credentials Acceptable in Manitoba?

Just like other member jurisdictions, Manitoba allows carriers to carry their IRP cab cards in either paper or electronic format. For those who choose the latter, however, it’s recommended that the document is saved in Personal Document Format (PDF). On top of that, it should be accessible by computer, smartphone, tablet, or any other electronic devices.

IRP Fees

All apportioned vehicles based in Manitoba are subject to registration fees, administration fees, and annual vehicle tax. They determine fees by factors like total distance traveled vehicle specs as well as registered gross vehicle weight.
