One of the benefits of the IRP is that it eliminates the need for a plate and permit for each state in which the vehicle travels. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Your base state will be responsible for all transactions necessary for IRP fee distributions. \u00a0Carriers are responsible for registering with their base state and keeping track of mileage. Your IRP fees will vary depending on the jurisdictions traveled. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Registering with IRP Indiana is an easy, one-step process. \u00a0If Indiana is your base jurisdiction, all you need to do is contact them for specific instructions and information. \u00a0You can find the contact information at the IRP jurisdiction directory <\/span>online<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Before registering for IRP, you need to know the qualifications. \u00a0First, in order to claim Indiana as your base jurisdiction, you must have an established place of business with a street address and listed telephone service and be able to provide the names of persons conducting business at the address. \u00a0Also, all operational records must be maintained and available at this location. <\/span><\/p>\n Under the IRP guidelines, vehicles that exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, have three or more axles, and travel among two or more jurisdictions (states) must be registered.<\/span><\/p>\n Next, you need to obtain a USDOT number. \u00a0This number is used by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as a way to identify you and your vehicles. \u00a0You will also need to receive FMCSA authorization to haul goods and register with the IFTA for fuel tax reporting. <\/span><\/p>\n The date for your renewal is shown on the cab card you received after registering with IRP. \u00a0You will receive a notice of the pending renewal approximately three months before the due date. \u00a0The notice will include all pertinent information needed for renewing your IRP plate.
