Utah is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). IRP often works as a cooperative program with IFTA in collecting and disbursing fuel tax revenue between the United States and Canadian provinces. This program benefits professional truckers by giving them an option to consolidate licensing and reporting requirements through their base jurisdiction.

All companies possessing vehicles that weigh over 26,000 pounds, or have a power unit with three or more axles which cross state borders are required to have an IRP account. If you are considering claiming Utah as your base jurisdiction, here is an article to help you with the process.

Utah IRP Registration

Basically, two factors mainly determine the cost of a license; the fee charged by each state in which your vehicles travel, and the miles covered by your vehicle in each state. Nevertheless, the fees can vary across different states based on;

  • The gross weight of your vehicle;
  • The gross value;
  • The model year;
  • And, also a combination of weight, value, and model year.

Additionally, there are certain things that a license won’t allow you to do, and this includes the following:

  • It won’t exempt you from motor fuel taxes.
  • from sales tax liability.
  • It won’t exempt you from acquiring a Commercial Driver’s License.
  • from acquiring a DOT number.
  • It won’t permit you to exceed the maximum specified length, width, and height, or the axle limitations.
  • It won’t permit you to violate the bridge laws.

When registering with IRP, you will be asked to pay a fee upfront depending on the gross weight of your vehicle and the jurisdictions you wish to register. Generally, it costs between $1,500 to $2,000 for registering a vehicle weighing 80,000 pounds and running all across the 48 states.

After registering, you will need to keep a tab on the miles you cover in each state along with the fuel purchased. Furthermore, you will also receive an IFTA quarterly report from your state in order to determine whether or not you owe fuel taxes.

Renewing Your Utah IRP Plate

Like every other IRP plates, even a Utah IRP plate renews every one year. Your base jurisdiction sends you a notice 30-45 days prior to the expiry date with all the information to renew your IRP plate. A few of the materials you would need to get your IRP plate renewed includes;

  • IRP Renewal Schedule A/E
  • IRP Renewal Schedule B
  • Accord Certificate of Liability Insurance
  • A copy of your valid Driver License, of the person who signed the IRP Renewal Schedule B, and the person to contact regarding the application.

Depending on the jurisdiction, and the applicant, there might arise a need to submit more documents or materials.

If you don’t receive a notice 30-45 days before your expiration date which could be found on your IRP cab card, let the IRP office know about the issue to stay away from fines and penalties.
