Currently to obtain an IFTA license in Alberta you will need to submit an application to the Alberta Treasury Board to receive your credentials. There is an annual registration fee of $15.00 for the IFTA license and an additional $10.00 for each pair of decals. Each qualified motor vehicle is required to have one set of decals on each vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Requirements for IFTA Alberta Licensing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are 10 Canadian provinces, including Alberta, that are members of the International Fuel Tax Agreement. Additionally, there are 48 U.S. member states. If you are new to the trucking industry and plan to operate out of Alberta province, you may be subject to the IFTA regulations. To qualify for an Alberta IFTA license:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your trucking business must be based in Alberta and maintain all operational controls and records here or can be made available to the province. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You must accrue mileage in Alberta and at least one other IFTA member jurisdictions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your vehicle(s) must be qualified according to the standards that follow. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A qualifying motor vehicle is one that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Has two axles with a GVW or registered weight that exceeds 26,000 pounds; <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or, has three or more axles regardless of weight; <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or, is used in combination when the GVW or registered weight of said combination exceeds 26,000 pounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, there are some exemptions from IFTA regulations. For example, exemptions are determined according to where you drive or purchase fuel. Some jurisdictions provide exemptions for private roads, toll roads, or Native American reservations. There are also exemptions for certain types of vehicles in different provinces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once you have determined that you qualify, you will need to apply for an IFTA Alberta license. When you receive your IFTA permit and decals, you must keep a copy of the license in each vehicle in your fleet. One decal should also be displayed on each side of the cab\u2019s exterior. Obtaining an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.truckingoffice.com\/ifta\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IFTA license<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also requires you to observe other regulations. \u00a0You\u2019ll need to keep track of all receipts or other supporting documents for fuel purchases and miles traveled in each jurisdiction. This information is required to file your quarterly IFTA fuel tax reports. \u00a0The due dates for filing are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To avoid penalties or fines, you should submit all quarterly reports by the respective due dates. \u00a0A penalty of $50, or 10% of the total tax liability is possible if you miss the filing date. Filing late can also affect the renewal of your license. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Renewing Your Alberta IFTA License<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IFTA Alberta licenses are issued for one year, expiring on December 31st. \u00a0It is advisable to submit your IFTA renewal application before November 30th to avoid processing delays. If you have not received your renewal by the expiry date, Alberta IFTA extends an IFTA sticker grace period to their members, which goes into February of the following year.
