Nova Scotia is one of the three Maritime provinces that is located directly in the middle between the equator and the north pole. Currently to obtain an IFTA license in Nova Scotia you must submit an application to the Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations office. There is an annual license fee of $30.25 and an additional $12.10 per set of decals. Each qualified vehicle is required to have a decal on both sides of the cab.<\/p>\n

Requirements for IFTA Nova Scotia Licensing<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

When you decided to become a professional trucker you made a wise choice. \u00a0Today, in the U.S. and Canada, the trucking industry is booming. Production rates have spiked in the past several years, and these goods need to be transported. \u00a0Job security for drivers couldn\u2019t be better. But, along with this outstanding opportunity comes a few things truckers aren\u2019t so fond of. Namely, paperwork, IFTA regulations, due dates, and did we say paperwork? \u00a0As a trucker, you\u2019ll need to be familiar with the <\/span>IFTA Nova Scotia<\/span><\/a> requirements, so we will cover some of the more pertinent information here.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you plan to declare Nova Scotia as your base jurisdiction, the following qualifications must be met:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Your business and all operational controls and records are based in Nova Scotia.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. You operate a qualified motor vehicle and accrue mileage in Nova Scotia and at least one other participating jurisdiction. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Your base jurisdiction is responsible for collecting and distributing your fuel use taxes. \u00a0Under the IFTA, you only need to file one tax report each quarter, then your base jurisdiction takes care of the rest. \u00a0Also, you will only need one license to travel among member jurisdictions. You will need to maintain detailed records of all fuel purchased and used in the tax period. This process is a significant improvement over the previous method. \u00a0The IFTA quarterly fuel tax schedule is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Keep in mind that failure to file by the due dates above can result in a hefty penalty of 10% of the total taxes owed, or $50, whichever is greater. \u00a0Delinquency can also interfere with renewing your license.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Renewing Your Nova Scotia IFTA License<\/span><\/h3>\n

    \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    IFTA permits are valid for one year and expire on December 31st. \u00a0Your IFTA renewal application should be submitted before November 30th to avoid any delays in receiving your license and IFTA decals. \u00a0Before you can qualify for a renewal, all IFTA reports and payments must be up-to-date. When you receive the IFTA license and decals be sure to carry a copy of the license inside the vehicle at all times. \u00a0You\u2019ll also need to display one of the IFTA decals on each side of the cab\u2019s exterior. If you need to request an extension, you must be sure your IFTA renewal application was submitted on time. Otherwise, the IFTA sticker grace period will not apply.<\/span><\/p>\n
