Maryland or “The Free State” is located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. and currently has a population of about 6 million. In order to receive an IFTA license you are required to fill out an application for the Comptroller of Maryland, Revenue Administration Division. All IFTA decals and applications are issued at no cost.<\/p>\n

State Requirements Maryland IFTA Licensing<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Before the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) was created, each state had its own system for reporting and disbursing fuel use taxes. \u00a0Truckers were required to carry IFTA permits and stickers for each state on their route. The system was inefficient and costly for everyone involved. \u00a0Today, the IFTA has simplified the process, but it isn\u2019t entirely effortless. Let\u2019s take a look at some of the main points of the agreement to help you better understand what is required before you can obtain an IFTA Maryland license. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, who needs an IFTA sticker? Maryland is your base jurisdiction if you have an established business in the state and operate a qualified motor vehicle in at least one more IFTA member jurisdiction. \u00a0To obtain an IFTA license, you must determine whether your vehicle qualifies. The requirements for a qualified vehicle are as follows: <\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The vehicle is designed, used, and maintained for transporting persons or property, and; <\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Has two axles with a GVW or registered GVW exceeding 26,000 pounds, or;<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Has three or more axles regardless of weight, or;<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Is used in combination and the weight of such combination is greater than 26,000 pounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    How Do I Get My IFTA Stickers?<\/span><\/h3>\n

     <\/p>\n

    If a vehicle meets these criteria, you can apply for an IFTA license.\u00a0 You can apply online or print the form and submit it by mail. Carriers who do not wish to participate in the IFTA program must obtain a single trip permit to travel through member jurisdictions.<\/span><\/p>\n

    After receiving the Maryland IFTA permits, a copy must be carried in each qualified vehicle. \u00a0Also, an IFTA decal must be permanently and visibly placed on the exterior of each side of the cab. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Renewing Your Maryland IFTA License<\/span><\/h3>\n

     <\/p>\n

    A Maryland IFTA license is issued for one year and expires on December 31st. \u00a0A renewal notice will be issued by RAD each year. You must be in compliance with all IFTA Maryland fuel use taxes to qualify for a renewal. \u00a0The IFTA quarterly fuel tax schedule is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n
