The midwestern state of Iowa or also known as the “The Hawkeye State” is home to 3 million people. In order to obtain an IFTA license in Iowa you must submit an application to the Office of Motor Carrier Services. Currently there is a $10 charge for the license and an additional $0.50 per set of decals. Each qualified vehicle must have one set of IFTA decal stickers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If your business is based in Iowa and you will travel interstate in two or more member jurisdictions, an Iowa IFTA license application must be filed. \u00a0First, you\u2019ll need to know if your vehicle qualifies. The list of qualifications can be found <\/span>here<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The purpose of the IFTA is to simplify the process of reporting, collecting, and disbursement of fuel use taxes among the member jurisdictions. \u00a0Drivers are required to maintain detailed records of all fuel purchased and used in each quarter of the year. The Iowa IFTA fuel tax forms are filed with your base jurisdiction on or before the due dates below: \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Failure to file before the deadline can incur a fine of 10% of the taxes owed, or $50, whichever is greater. \u00a0It\u2019s also important to remember that the IFTA will not renew your license if all fuel use taxes are not paid up-to-date. \u00a0If you are concerned that you might miss an IFTA deadline and suffer the consequences, a trucking management software can be helpful. \u00a0We\u2019ll tell you more about that below.<\/span><\/p>\n

Renewing Your Iowa IFTA License<\/span><\/h3>\n

IFTA licenses must be renewed each year before December 31st. \u00a0New IFTA decals must be displayed on each side of the cab before the end of the IFTA sticker grace period, which is the end of February. \u00a0You are also required to keep a copy of the current IFTA permit inside each vehicle. Operating without valid IFTA stickers and IFTA permits aboard can incur fines or citations that could force you to park your vehicle(s) until the matter is resolved. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An IFTA license can be revoked for several different reasons. \u00a0For instance:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Failure to file IFTA quarterly tax returns on time.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Failure to pay taxes due all jurisdictions.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Failure to protest or pay an audit assessment.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Revocation of an IRP license. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
