North Carolina or “The Tar Heel State” is located in the Southeastern United States and is currently home to roughly 10 million people. To receive your North Carolina IFTA license you must submit an application to the Excise Tax Division. North Carolina does not charge for your IFTA application or your decals.<\/p>\n

State Requirements IFTA North Carolina Licensing<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

North Carolina is a member of the International Fuel Tax Agreement. \u00a0The purpose of the IFTA is to simplify the process of reporting and disbursing fuel use taxes. \u00a0As an IFTA licensee, you\u2019ll only have to file one quarterly tax return and obtain only one license that allows you to travel in all member jurisdictions. \u00a0To claim this state as your base jurisdiction, you must meet the following <\/span>IFTA North Carolina<\/span><\/a> requirements:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Your business is based in North Carolina, and all operational controls and records are maintained and can be made available in the state.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Your vehicle(s) are registered and accrue mileage in the state.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. You travel in North Carolina and at least one other member jurisdiction with a qualified vehicle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    So, who needs an IFTA sticker and permit? A qualified vehicle is defined as one that is designed, maintained, and used to transport people or property. \u00a0Also, the vehicle must have 2 axles with a GVW of more than 26,000 pounds; or have 3 axles regardless of weight; or have a combination GVW of more than 26,000 pounds. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    When your IFTA license application is approved, you\u2019ll receive one license and a set of two IFTA decals. \u00a0The license must be carried inside the vehicle, and the decals should be displayed on each side of the cab\u2019s exterior. \u00a0You can get IFTA replacement stickers at an additional cost if yours are lost, stolen, or damaged. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Under the IFTA, you are required to file quarterly fuel use tax reports to your base jurisdiction. \u00a0They are responsible for collecting and disbursing your taxes to all member jurisdictions on your route. \u00a0The quarterly tax due dates are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

    To avoid a fine of 10% of the total taxes owed, or $50, whichever is greater, you must file before the due dates shown above. \u00a0Delinquent taxes can also interfere with the renewal of your license.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Renewing Your North Carolina IFTA License<\/span><\/h2>\n

     <\/p>\n

    North Carolina IFTA licenses are issued for one year, expiring on December 31st. \u00a0It\u2019s best to submit your application before November 30th to avoid any delays in receiving your IFTA sticker renewal. \u00a0\u00a0A grace period is in place that allows truckers to display their current valid decals through February of the coming year. \u00a0However, the grace period only applies to drivers who have submitted a renewal application on time. <\/span><\/p>\n
