New York or the “The Big Apple” is located in the Northeastern region of the United States and is home to almost 20 million people. To obtain an IFTA license in New York you must mail in your completed application to the New York Tax Department. Currently New York does not charge you for an application, however there is an $8 fee for each set of two decals. Each qualified vehicle is required to have one set of decals.<\/p>\n

State Requirements IFTA New York Licensing<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

New York State is one of three International Fuel Tax Agreement participants that taxes both fuel use and highway use. \u00a0Vehicles above a certain weight that operate across NY state lines must pay the standard fuel use taxes. The highway use tax (HUT) applies to vehicles above a certain weight operating within the state. \u00a0Under <\/span>IFTA New York<\/span><\/a> licensing guidelines, passenger or freight carriers based in the state must submit quarterly fuel use tax reports in addition to the HUT quarterly reports.<\/span><\/p>\n

Qualified motor vehicles operating in more than one IFTA jurisdiction must obtain a license and IFTA decals that allow them to travel in any member jurisdiction. \u00a0A qualified vehicle is one that is designed, maintained, and used to transport persons or property, and meets the following stipulations:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Has two axles and a GVW or registered GVW that exceeds 26,000 pounds, or<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Is used in combination when the weight of such combination is more than 26,000 pounds GVW or registered GVW, or<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Has three axles, regardless of weight.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    New York State is your base jurisdiction if you register your vehicles in the state, maintain operational control and records in the state, and accrue mileage in the state. \u00a0If your application for a license is approved, you\u2019ll receive one license and two IFTA decals for each registered vehicle. A copy of the license must be carried inside the cab, and one IFTA decal must be affixed to each side of the cab\u2019s exterior. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    As an IFTA licensee, your quarterly fuel use taxes are due as follows: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    If you fail to file before the due date, you can be fined 10% of the total taxes due, or $50, whichever is greater. \u00a0Delinquent filing or payments can interfere with renewing your IFTA license and decals.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Renewing Your New York IFTA License<\/span><\/h3>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Your IFTA license and decals expire each year on December 31st. \u00a0However, your current license and decals may remain displayed during the IFTA sticker grace period that extends through February of the coming year. \u00a0To avoid any delays or penalties, you should submit your IFTA license application before November 30th. If you are not compliant with all IFTA fuel use taxes, your application will not be approved. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    IFTA New York allows you to file for your renewal license electronically and pay online using <\/span>IFTA Web File<\/span><\/a> if you prepare tax documents yourself, use a computer to prepare filings, and have broadband Internet access.<\/span><\/p>\n
