Located in the Western United States is Montana, also known as the “Treasure State.” Regarding IFTA, to obtain a license you must submit an application to the Motor Carrier Services with all the required documents. Montana does not charge a fee for the application or your decals.<\/p>\n

State Requirements Montana IFTA Licensing<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you’re thinking about becoming a professional driver, there are some things you will need to know about the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and how it benefits truckers. \u00a0The IFTA implements uniform fuel use taxation among 48 U.S. member jurisdictions and 10 Canadian provinces. Who needs an IFTA sticker? The following requirements must be met to qualify for an IFTA Montana license:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Your business is based in Montana, and all operational controls and records are maintained and can be made available in the state.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. You operate a qualified motor vehicle and accrue miles in Montana and in at least one or more member jurisdictions.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A qualified vehicle is one that is designed, maintained, and used for transporting of persons or property; has two axles and a GVW or registered GVW of more than 26,000 pounds, or has three or more axles regardless of weight, or has a combination GVW or registered GVW over 26,000 pounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Before the IFTA was created, truckers were required to display IFTA stickers for each state on their route and pay taxes individually to those states. \u00a0The current process saves valuable time and can reduce administrative costs. <\/span><\/p>\n

    For IFTA licensees, the new method for reporting fuel use taxes is simple. \u00a0You\u2019ll only need to file one tax return each quarter with your base jurisdiction. \u00a0Also, only one IFTA license is required for operating through all member jurisdictions.<\/span><\/p>\n
